MRS.JOYCE BAWAH-MOGTARI was the Head of the Legal Unit of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority since 2007.
She graduated from the Holborn College, University of London, United Kingdom in 1997 with a Bachelor of Laws, (LL.B) degree and was called to the Ghana Bar in the year 2000.Sheis a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Ghana after graduating as a Barrister at Law, (B.L) from the Ghana Law School.
Joyce also holds a Masters in Maritime Law (L.L.M)from the International Maritime Organization(IMO) International Maritime Law Institute, (IMLI) Malta, where she was the recipient of the IMO Legal Committee Chairman’s Award for Best Overall Performance in International TransportLaw. Before joining the Ghana Shippers’ Authority, Joyce worked both in the private and public sectors of Ghana, first as a private Legal Consultant in the law firm SEY & Co, a Consultant Company Secretary for a subsidiary of KPMG, Accra Nominees Limited and the Ghana Venture Capital Limited as a Solicitor – Secretary and Legal Advisor.
She has consulted extensively in Company Law and Secretarial Practice, mergers, acquisitions and syndicated loans. She has participated in mediation and arbitration involving large shipping Companies.
In 2005, Joyce was identified as a young female leader due to her contribution and work with the African Women Lawyers’ Association (AWLA) Ghana Chapter and was nominated by the United States Department of State to participate in the prestigious International Visitor Leadership Programme (IVLP).
Joyce has since 2008 been a member of Ghana‘s Delegation to the IMO Legal Committee meetings.She participated actively in the United Nations Commission on International Trade(UNCITRAL) meetings leading up to thedevelopment of the United Nations Convention on the Carriage of Goods Wholly or Partly by Sea now the Rotterdam Rules, 2009 and has written extensively on the subject.
Shehas participated in a number of training programmes and represented the Ghana Shippers’ Authority at various seminars and conferences locally and internationally.
Joyce is a member of the Ghana Bar Association, the African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA), the Women in International Shipping and Trade Association, (WISTA) and the Ghana State Alumni.
Joyce’s hobbies are reading, writing and walking. She is married and has a son.
